In this recent John Willox Kitchen Design, we transformed an outdated kitchen into a sophisticated, open-plan space. With dark Rot Punkt cabinetry, elegant Silestone worktops and premium appliances like AEG ovens and a versatile Quooker Flex tap, this sleek kitchen redesign perfectly blends style and functionality for a contemporary, social hub.
Our client’s kitchen transformation in Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire was a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic desire. The vision was to create an open, social space by knocking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, ensuring a seamless flow that would encourage gatherings without the barrier of walls. The result was a sleek, modern kitchen with sophisticated details and carefully chosen products.
The foundation of the design was the Rot Punkt Zerox HPL in Carbon, an anti-fingerprint finish, selected not only for its rich, dark tone but also for practicality. Our client wanted a kitchen that looked stunning but was easy to maintain. To balance the dark cabinetry, the Silestone Desert Silver worktops in a suede finish were introduced. This light grey worktop, with a hint of warmth and subtle veining, provided texture without overwhelming the modern industrial vibe. Its suede finish added to the tactile experience of the space, maintaining the overall tone while offering a smooth, inviting surface.
For the sink area, a Franke Granite Kubus sink in matt black was chosen to create a striking contrast against the lighter worktop, while the Quooker Flex tap in stainless steel aligned with the steel trims of the appliances. The client particularly appreciated the flexibility of the hose, making it an ideal blend of style and function. The combination of a sleek AEG oven duo, chosen for its minimalist aesthetic, and a Caple dual-zone wine fridge ensured that the kitchen would be perfect for entertaining.
Designing the layout involved creating a space where the kitchen’s large island would be the social hub, with ample seating for breakfast or casual gatherings. The client’s request for a dark, moody grey palette that didn’t go as far as black led to the selection of materials that felt modern yet inviting. The smoked mirror glass splashback added another layer of sophistication, reflecting light into the room and enhancing the open feel. Final touches like LED mood lighting under the wall units and plinth provided soft, atmospheric lighting to the space, offering both functionality and elegance.
