A modern shaker kitchen centred around a statement island

When our client began reimagining her kitchen, she knew two things for certain, she wanted more storage and worktop space, plus a contemporary feel without losing the timeless character she loved. Our designer, Emma, proposed a refined “modern shaker” look with Bauformat’s Girona Smooth shaker cabinetry in striking Black Green, featuring a slim shaker profile and layered detailing. A choice that balanced a classic style with a confident modern twist.

challanges & breakthroughs

But like many great transformations, this project began with a challenge. The breakthrough came from rethinking the layout entirely. The customer suggested that the existing patio doors (positioned where the ovens now sit) were limiting the room’s potential.

L-shaped with island layout

The redesigned L-shaped layout, centred around a statement kitchen island, increased their storage and created a natural focal point at the heart of the space. Designed for both cooking and entertaining, it quickly became the client’s favourite feature. Its proportions feel balanced rather than oversized, offering generous preparation space while maintaining effortless circulation.

Appliances & features

A Miro venting hob removed the need for an overhead extractor, allowing decorative pendant lighting to take centre stage.

A softly illuminated display niche adds warmth and personality, subtly breaking up the deep cabinetry. Beneath, discreet plinth lighting creates a floating effect, giving the darker units a sense of visual lightness.

Lighter glazed wall cabinet prevents the run from feeling heavy and introduces contrast and depth to the kitchen space. Satin brass handles by Alexander & Wilks bring cohesion and warmth. A feature that blends everyday practicality with statement design was the client’s must-have, gold Quooker tap.

The quartz worktops and matching splashback provide a seamless, durable surface, complemented by a Carron Phoenix champagne stone sink. NEFF appliances and a Caple wine fridge complete the high-end specification, while warm Sensio LED strip lighting enhances both practicality and atmosphere.
